Why do some wine bottles have grooves on the bottom?

Someone once asked a question, why do some wine bottles have grooves at the bottom? The amount of grooves feels less. In fact, this is too much to think about. The amount of capacity written on the wine label is the amount of capacity, which has nothing to do with the groove at the bottom of the bottle. There are several reasons why the bottom of the bottle is designed with grooves.

1. Reduce hand temperature exposure

This is the most well-known reason. We all know that the “temperature” of wine is very important, and small temperature changes can also affect the taste and flavor of wine. In order not to be affected by the temperature of the hand when pouring the wine, the bottom of the bottle can be held to pour the wine. The groove design can also reduce the chance of the hand directly touching the wine bottle and will not affect the temperature too directly. And this pouring posture is also very suitable for some social occasions of drinking wine, elegant and stable.

2. Is it really suitable for wine?
Some wines (especially red wine) have problems with sediment, and the grooves at the bottom of the bottle allow the sediment to lie there; and the groove design can make the bottle more resistant to high pressure, such as sparkling wine or champagne, which contains bubbles This function is very necessary for the wines.

3. Purely “technical” problem?
In fact, before the mechanization of the industrial revolution, each wine bottle was blown and hand-crafted by a glass master, so grooves were formed at the bottom of the bottle; and even now using machines, wine with grooves The bottle is also relatively easy to come out of the mold when it is “unmolded”.

4. Grooves have nothing to do with wine quality
Having said so much, the groove does have its essential function, but in terms of winemaking technology, whether there is a groove at the bottom of the bottle is not the key to telling you whether the wine is good or not. “This matter is the same as whether the bottle mouth uses a “cork stopper”, it’s just an obsession.
