Hate bitter wine? Maybe you need a low tannin wine!

Loving wine, but not being a fan of tannins is a question that plagues many wine lovers. This compound produces a dry sensation in the mouth, similar to over-brewed black tea. For some people, there may even be an allergic reaction. So what to do? There are still methods. Wine lovers can easily find a low-tannin red wine according to the wine-making method and grape variety. Might as well try it next time?

Tannin is a natural high-efficiency preservative, which can improve the aging potential of wine, effectively prevent wine from becoming sour due to oxidation, and keep long-term stored wine in the best condition. Therefore, tannin is very important for the aging of red wine. Ability is decisive. A bottle of red wine in a good vintage may get better after 10 years.

As the aging progresses, the tannins will gradually develop into finer and smoother, making the overall taste of the wine appear fuller and rounder. Of course, the more tannins in wine, the better. It needs to reach a balance with the acidity, alcohol content and flavor substances of the wine, so that it will not appear too harsh and hard.

Because red wine absorbs most of the tannins while absorbing the color of the grape skins. The thinner the grape skins, the less tannins are transferred to the wine. Pinot Noir falls into this category, offering a fresh and light flavor profile with relatively little tannin.

Pinot Noir, a grape that also comes from Burgundy. This wine is light-bodied, bright and fresh, with fresh red berry flavors and smooth, soft tannins.

Tannins are easily found in the skins, seeds and stems of grapes. Also, oak contains tannins, which means that the newer the oak, the more tannins will be in the wine. Wines that are often aged in new oak include big reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, which are already already high in tannins. So avoid these wines and be good. But there’s no harm in drinking it if you want to.

Therefore, those who don’t like too dry and too astringent red wine can choose some red wine with weak tannin and softer taste. It is also a good choice for novices who are new to red wine! However, remember one sentence: red grapes are not absolutely not astringent, and white wine is not absolutely sour!
